Sony reorganizes smartphone branch in Europe: focus on online and fewer countries

It may not be as big as it used to be, but Xperia phones will soon be even harder to find. Sony's mobile arm is reportedly reconsidering its presence in Europe and pulling out of some countries.
The Sony Xperia 1 VII announced in May is still not available in the Netherlands, and that appears to be no coincidence. Sony seems to be preparing to exit the European market and has already done so in Finland, notes Suomimobiili.fi. Is one of the oldest phone brands coming to an end?
Several sources tell SuomiMobiilille that a departure from Europe is being worked on. Sony wants to leave sales to online sales channels including Amazon and Sony's own website from now on. Sales through telecom providers and physical stores are not among them. We are currently focusing on e-commerce channels to provide our customers with a smoother purchasing process. Currently, the Xperia 1 VII phone can be purchased directly from Sony's official online store and through Amazon in selected European markets
Sony stressed that existing customers can simply contact the company for support and warranty. Software upgrades and security updates for existing Xperia phones are also still expected.
Not the first time
Sony also scaled back its phone business in 2019. Then it withdrew from Africa, India, Australia, Canada and South America. Europe, like Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, actually remained a focus area. But that now seems to be coming to an end as well. The question now is how long it will be before we can put Sony in the same league as LG, HTC, BlackBerry and Nokia.
