This is how small the battery is in Apple's wafer-thin iPhone 17 Air

Apple iPhones are known for their extremely efficient power consumption. They can get by with much smaller batteries due to Apple's excellent matching of hardware and software. And so it should come as no surprise that the skinny iPhone 17 Air gets an equally skinny battery capacity. But isn't it a bit too skinny?

5.5 millimeters thin. That's the expected thickness of the Apple iPhone 17 Air expected late this year. Compare that to the iPhone 16 which is 7.8 mm thick and has a 3561 mAh battery, and a good 2 millimeters goes off. But so does the battery because a new leak claims a battery capacity of only 2,800 mAh for the iPhone 17 Air.

By comparison; the now official S25 Edge, also a thin model, comes with a 3900 mAh battery. And we thought that was already low. Still, Samsung promises a day of use with a full battery, something practical tests and independent expert reviews have yet to reveal. And presumably Apple will also make a similar claim after the launch of the Air.

iPhone Air is thinner and lighter

The source of this claim thinks that the weight of the Apple iPhone 17 Air comes out to about 145 grams, and in this regard Apple also beats arch-rival Samsung with its S25 Edge. So the latter is heavier AND thicker. But the Edge does have a larger battery and features a camera more than the iPhone Air.

In addition to a single 48MP camera, the Air will presumably get a 6.6-inch screen and Apple's own energy-efficient C1 modem. Presumably with the power saving mode, it will also get some help from AI to get the most out of the battery. And if not, you can still snap a magsafe power bank onto the back. Should the model have MagSafe magnets, something Apple left out with the iPhone 16e.
