Siri from iOS 19 to be traded in for something else

When Apple introduced Siri in 2011, it was ahead of its time. But after years of neglect, the voice assistant is miles behind the competition. Fortunately, as of iOS 19, that seems to be changing but not thanks to Apple, but thanks to the EU.

Because according to Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg, Apple will make it possible in iOS 19 to swap Siri for another voice assistant. So, in theory, you could soon be asking your questions to ChatGPT, Alexa, Google Gemini or DeepSeek. This would only apply to users in the EU, as Apple must comply with stricter regulations.

Ideally, Apple would like to develop a smarter Siri. One similar to what Apple demonstrated during the unveiling of iOS 18. But this version of Siri with Apple Intelligence has been delayed and is also not coming during the unveiling of iOS 19. Apple has not paid attention to AI for years, and you can see that now. The fact that iPhone users in the EU will soon be able to turn to competitor voice assistants will not help Apple's position on AI.

Collaboration between Apple and OpenAI

Incidentally, Apple is already working with OpenAI; the owner of ChatGPT. Thus, Siri can already forward questions it does not know the answer to to ChatGPT without leaving the app. Provided you turn on Apple Intelligence, use Siri in English and have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 or newer.

Smarter Siri

Apple introduced Apple Intelligence in May of 2024 but is still rolling out the promise it made then. Many of the features shown are still not possible. It is also questionable whether they will become available next year. In particular, the examples Apple showed about a smarter Siri seem off the table.
