Thin Apple iPhone 17 Air compared alongside iPhone 16

Wondering how thin the iPhone 17 Air is next to the existing iPhone 16? This photo tells the answer. Impressive it certainly is, but what also stands out is the camera, which sticks out incredibly far.

Cameras in your phone are pretty complex things. They consist of a sensor that converts light into digital signals, a lens to position the image as correctly as possible on the sensor, and usually there is also a mechanism in there to absorb shock (OIS). And so even the thin iPhone 17 Air does not escape a thick camera module.

So thick, in fact, that we suspect the camera is twice as thick as the iPhone 17 Air itself. This is not as noticeable on other iPhones, such as the iPhone 16 above. There, the camera sticks out a millimeter at most, but not on the iPhone Air. When you soon have this one in your pocket, everyone will wonder what's poking out of it.

Apple vs Samsung

Samsung has solved that with the S25 Edge by making the one camera module protrude like a trapezoid. As a result, it looks smaller than it actually is. Apple is obviously taking a different approach.

Air replaces the Plus

Apple is expected to trade in the iPhone Plus for a thin iPhone Air model. This will feature the same screen size, but will have a significantly smaller battery. According to recent rumors, one of only 2800 mAh. Presumably Apple still manages to squeeze a day of use out of this one though we'd like to test that for ourselves before we believe them.
