Diogo Jota and brother Andre funeral to take place across weekend after tragic death in car accident

Funeral plans for Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, have been confirmed following their untimely deaths in a tragic car accident during the early hours of Thursday morning.

The pair were involved in a fatal crash just ten miles into Spain from the Portuguese border after their Lamborghini suffered a tyre failure while overtaking another vehicle.

The car veered off the road, burst into flames, and could not be saved.

The devastating news has prompted an outpouring of grief and support across the footballing world and beyond.

Outside Anfield, fans have created a heartfelt tribute that now stretches over 100 yards, filled with flowers, balloons, scarves, and handwritten messages.

Mourners aren’t just reflecting on Jota’s football legacy – just two weeks ago, the 28-year-old married his long-term partner and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso, in a touching ceremony held at the altar.

The funeral for Diogo and Andre, who was 26, will take place at 10am on Saturday in Sao Cosme, a small town roughly 30 minutes inland from Porto.

The same location served as the venue for Jota’s wedding on June 22. A wake will be held the day before at the same church, according to local priest Jose Manuel Macedo.

On Thursday afternoon, hearses were spotted arriving at a funeral home in Puebla de Sanabria, the Spanish town where the brothers’ bodies had been transported following the accident.

At the time of the crash, the two were reportedly driving back to the UK by car, rather than flying, due to recent medical advice Jota had received. He had undergone minor lung surgery, and his doctors had strongly recommended against air travel.

Jota’s passing has left an immeasurable void, not only at Liverpool where he played for five years but also within the Portuguese national team.

Since his 2020 transfer from Wolves, he amassed 182 appearances for the Reds, netted 65 goals, and recorded 26 assists.

His efforts contributed significantly to Liverpool’s domestic and European successes, and he was a key figure in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph, earning 50 international caps.

Liverpool released a statement requesting privacy for the family as they come to terms with the unimaginable loss.

Public tributes have poured in from prominent footballing figures including Jurgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, and Cristiano Ronaldo, all honouring a player remembered as much for his infectious smile as for his brilliant talent.
