Mohamed Salah ‘frightened’ to go back to Liverpool after death of friend Diogo Jota

Mohamed Salah says the death of Diogo Jota makes him “frightened” to go back to Liverpool following the close-season break.
Jota, and his brother Andre Silva, were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning when the Lamborghini they were travelling in came off the road in the Spanish province of Zamora.
It is believed the pair were heading for Santander to catch a ferry to England after Jota had been advised against flying due to a recent operation.

Jota and Silva will never be forgotten – Salah
Salah, one of Jota’s strike partners at Anfield, has joined his team-mates in paying tribute to the hugely popular Portugal international, who was 28, had got married two weeks ago and had three children.
He wrote on X: “I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this.
“It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back. My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children.
“Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”

Wake underway in Portugal
Mourners started to gather this morning in the Portuguese town of Gondomar for the wake that will be held at Capela de Ressurreicao before the funeral at the Igreja Matriz, the Catholic church next door, on Saturday morning. It is the same church where Jota and his long-term partner Rute Cardoso were married on June 22.
Liverpool have cancelled the fitness tests that were planned for some players today.
A phased return will now take place next week.
Fans have continued to visit Anfield and lay flowers. Former captain Jordan Henderson joined them this morning, taking time to read the tributes before laying a wreath of his own with a note attached that read: “Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you.”
