Preview for Paris Saint-Germain v Bayern Munich

The Club World Cup steps up a notch tomorrow with two European heavyweights slugging it out in Atlanta.

Paris Saint-Germain, the champions of France and Europe, take on Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich for the right to play either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.

Both squads are stacked with international talent and it is the kind of match-up FIFA envisaged when they decided to expand this tournament to draw in more fans Stateside ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Bayern president Herbert Hainer is expecting a close game which could go either way.

He told TZ: “PSG are certainly one of the best teams in Europe and played well at this competition so far.

“We compete against the Champions League winners with the greatest respect – but we are FC Bayern and we don’t have to fear anyone.”

PSG’s last two games against European opposition saw them beat Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final and Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their opener at the Club World Cup.

They have developed into a winning machine under Luis Enrique but Hainer has confidence in Vincent Kompany’s side.

He added: “As we have seen, our team is in a good place – and when two top teams play against each other, it is always a spectacle for the fans. Such games are about nuances, sometimes the form of the day decides.”

Tomorrow could be Thomas MĂŒller’s final appearance in a Bayern shirt.

The midfielder holds the record for the most appearances in the club’s history but is now counting down to the day he has to move on.

Muller has enjoyed being with the squad for the final time in the US and is hoping to go out with a bang.

He said: “Compared to everyday life in the Bundesliga, such major tournaments are about the short-term perspective. We need to go big or go home.”

Bayern beat Flamengo 4-2 in the last 16 while PSG brushed aside the challenge of Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 4-0.

Luis Enrique has transformed PSG from a club beset by internal problems caused by superstar players to a young, hungry squad that could dominate continental competition for many years.

The Spaniard is very much focused on the present, however, and is hoping they can back up their recent successes with another trophy.

He said: “This is clearly a historic season for our club, and we intend to continue making history in this competition.”

Ousmane Dembele made his return as a substitute against Miami and Luis Enrique could be tempted to start the France forward. However, with Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in good form, Dembele may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Kompany also has a full squad to chose from, although Leroy Sane has left the US and completed his move to Galatasaray.

Jamal Musiala could come in for Serge Gnabry.
