Wrexham fail in ambitious bid for former Manchester United midfielder

Wrexham have been rebuffed after making an ambitious move to sign former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.
The Denmark international left Old Trafford last month following the expiration of his contract and was immediately targeted by the North Wales club, who are preparing for life in the Championship after three successive promotions.
But Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots says the 33-year-old wants to play at a higher level.
Schoots told Mail Sport: “Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field, and it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like [CEO] Michael Williamson there.
“But Christian still wants to play in a first-tier competition and he absolutely wants to stay in Western Europe. There are some contacts going on but it has to suit both sides.”
Wrexham thinking big ahead of Championship campaign
Wrexham’s rise through the Football League pyramid has been funded and directed by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds and they have been active in the transfer market this summer.
Goalkeeper Danny Ward, striker Ryan Hardie and defender Liberato Cacace have all moved to the Stoke Cae Ras. A move for Eriksen, however, would have been the most eye-catching.
Prior to playing for United, Eriksen starred for Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford after emerging as one of the best young players in Europe at Ajax.
His career stalled after he suffered a cardiac arrest in June 2021 playing for his country at Euro 2020 but, having returned with Brentford, he secured a move to Old Trafford 13 months later.
Eriksen made 73 Premier League appearances for United but struggled for game time under Ruben Amorim.
He has also won 144 caps for Denmark, scoring 46 goals.
