Manchester United: Ruben Amorim says members of ‘Bomb Squad’ could be re-introduced

Ruben Amorim insists he would be “happy” to start the new season with the Manchester United squad as it stands, and has not ruled out members of the ‘Bomb Squad’ being re-integrated.

United have been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo the only two arrivals expected to make an immediate impact.

The club are looking to sell before they buy but have so far not found takers for the likes of Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia, although Marcus Rashford did this week join Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option for the Catalan club to make the deal permanent.

Amorim – We are giving Bomb Squad players time to think

It is an unwanted distraction for Amorim as he embarks on his first opening to a new season at Old Trafford.

Asked about the quartet, who have remained in Manchester and not joined United on their pre-season tour of the United States, Amorim said: “Some players have to move to make space in the team, others want a new challenge. We are giving them time to think and if they reach a point where they have to join the team they will.

“[CEO] Omar [Berrada] and [sporting director] Jason [Wilcox] have a number for these players, if that isn’t reached they will be United players. I am ready to receive the players. I have more options and if they have to fight each other to play that is perfect.”

Team spirit is key at Manchester United – Amorim

United looked a disjointed outfit for much of last season – their worst in 50 years – and Amorim is eager to build a stronger team ethic.

“You feel the bond between the players in the best teams,” he added. “We remind ourself how special it is to be at the best club in the world. I really like to be in a group that is healthy. We are going to suffer but that feeling of bonding is really important.

“The spirit is positive.”

There were reports this morning linking left-back Luke Shaw with a move from Old Trafford but Amorim spoke highly of the England international.

“He is a world class player,” he said of the injury-plagued defender. “You can feel in the small things, [in] England [there are] two finals and he has issues in the season but in the final he is always there.

“That means something but he needs to be fit, he needs to train to the limit and he is doing that. He’s a great player but he has competition this season so I’m pleased with Luke.”

New players want to be at Manchester United

United continue their pre-season preparations against West Ham in New Jersey on Sunday and Amorim is adamant he is happy with where his squad is three weeks out from the new campaign.

He said: “The new signings are really humble, that is really important, and they chose to be here. They had other options, Champions League options, they read what people say about our club but they chose to be here and this is a key point for me.

“In the moment we need to be really careful when we sign a player. If I have to start the season with this squad I will be happy because all the players that are here want to be here. With Matheus and Bryan we are clearly a better team.”
