Women’s Euro final 2025: James a doubt, says Wiegman… and Morgan reveals players watched Love Island after semi final

England “don’t know” if Lauren James will be fit for their Women’s Euro 2025 final against Spain on Sunday after the Chelsea forward was withdrawn at half-time in their semi-final win over Italy with an ankle injury.

Four-time Women’s Super League champion James has started all five of England’s games in Switzerland and is “doing things” on the training pitch but “still recovering”, coach Sarina Wiegman says.

“We have two more days, so we’re going to give her time,” added Wiegman. “We don’t know yet [if she’ll be ready], but that’s what we’re going to go for – 23 players available.”

Will Lauren James be fit? Stats, goals

James scored twice in England’s 4-0 win over the Netherlands and contributed one goal in qualifying, netting in a 2-0 victory in Ireland on April 9.

Among her nine goals in 33 caps, the 23-year-old scored the only goal against Denmark and twice in a 6-1 win over China during the group stage of the 2023 World Cup, helping England reach the final.

Arsenal’s Beth Mead, who was the player of the tournament as England won the 2022 edition, is a potential candidate to replace James, as are fellow Gunners players Chloe Kelly – scorer of the 119th-minute winner against the Azzurre – and Michelle Agyemang, who equalised in the 96th minute of regular time in that game.

England vs Spain: ‘A few of us watched Love Island’

Esme Morgan has explained how some of the England squad turned to reality TV after their extravagantly dramatic comeback win in Geneva to set up a repeat of the 2023 World Cup decider, which La Roja won 1-0 in Sydney.

“Everyone was celebrating with the fans in the stadium and with our families,” Washington Spirit centre-back Morgan told womenseuro.com.

“A few of us watched Love Island to wind down before bed because it’s really hard to sleep after excitement like that.

“But then in the days after, focus has been on recovery and now training focus has shifted to Spain and how we can prepare to meet them.”

What time does the Women’s Euro 2025 final kick off?

The final in Basel will start at 17:00 BST UK time on Sunday, July 27, 2025. That’s 18:00 CET in Europe or 12:00 ET and 09:00 PT in the US.

Morgan called it “strange” that England had managed not to “maybe lose a bit of hope” with the clocking ticking past 90 minutes with Italy 1-0 ahead in the final four.

“I still had belief that we were going to have a moment,” the 24-year-old reflected. “I felt really calm, bizarrely, and I just felt really confident we were going to keep the momentum, keep pushing it all the way to the end.

“Thankfully, that happened and Michelle had an amazing finish to send us into extra time.”

Kelly, who pounced first to score the rebound after goalkeeper Laura Giuliani saved her penalty, said captain Leah Williamson had told her England “just needed one moment” to take the tie to extra time.

“While you’re on the pitch, you always believe you can make something happen,” she said. “Michelle got the ball in the back of the net, as she always does for us.”
