Cristiano Ronaldo signs new contract at Al-Nassr

Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo have confirmed the Portugal superstar has signed a two-year contract extension.

It had been widely expected the 40-year-old would extend his stay at the Riyadh club with speculation mounting in recent days.

An Al-Nassr post on X appeared to confirm the news this lunchtime, showing Ronaldo walking down a beach with him saying at the end: “Al-Nassr forever”.

The tweet was accompanied by the wording: “The story continues with Al-Nassr’s historic leader…”

And the club posted another message on X shortly after, revealing Ronaldo had penned a two-year deal.

Ronaldo himself said: “A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let’s make history together.”

Al-Nassr u-turn for Ronaldo

It represents a major u-turn from Ronaldo, who hinted last month that he would be leaving the Riyadh club after posting a message that read: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, who had been linked with clubs playing in the ongoing Club World Cup, remains key to the profile of the Pro League and it is believed both Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli were also keen to sign him.

The news comes a day after Al-Nassr announced the departure of manager Stefano Pioli, with the Italian set to return to Serie A with Fiorentina.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez named Ronaldo in his Nations League squad last month, and the Selecao’s all-time leading marksman scored in the semi-final against Germany and final against Spain as his country became champions.

The five-time Champions League winner scored 35 goals in 41 matches across all competitions for Al-Nassr in 2024/25 to finish as the Pro League top scorer in successive seasons, although Al-Nassr finished 13 points off champions Al-Ittihad in third.

Ronaldo’s wealth set to increase

On Forbes’ all-time list of the highest earning athletes, only boxer Floyd Mayweather eclipses Ronaldo, having earned an estimated $300m (£226m) in 2015 and $285m (£214.5m) in 2018.

Ronaldo was said to have surpassed $1 billion (£771m) in career earnings two years before becoming the most high-profile footballer to move to Saudi Arabia in December 2022 following his departure from United.

Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr deal is widely reported to be worth £14.75m a month or £3.4m per week. His annual salary is said to be £177m per year, made up of £62m for his football salary, supplemented by commercial bonuses.

The player known as CR7 has a variety of lucrative sponsorship deals, with his recent endorsements including Whoop, video game UFL and cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
