City, meanwhile, have started their title defence well, opening with a professional 2-0 win over Wydad before dismantling Al-Ain 6-0 in Atlanta.

Ilkay Gundogan struck twice in that second match, with Erling Haaland, Oscar Bobb, Claudio Echeverri and Rayan Cherki also getting in on the act.

It was City’s biggest win since beating Ipswich by the same scoreline in January.

The stakes are high in this match. Finishing second could mean facing Real Madrid in the next round, a team City have drawn repeatedly in recent European campaigns.
