Brentford confirm Jordan Henderson swoop

Brentford have confirmed the signing of England international Jordan Henderson, with boss Keith Andrews confident the experienced midfielder will make a major impact at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Henderson tore up his contract at Ajax last week, even though it still had 12 months left to run, with the intention of moving back to the Premier League.

And Brentford were quick to make their move, snapping him up on a two-year deal.

A simple decision to sign Henderson – Andrews

Andrews told the club’s official website: “When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision.

“We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot.

“With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that.

“We’ve got a pretty young squad, overall, and we’ve got a lot of club experience, which is really important, with the likes of Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen, Ethan Pinnock and Josh Dasilva, who is still at the club doing rehab.

“But what Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club.

“He also has experience at international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession – that’s the exact way we want to be as a football club.

“He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad.”

Vastly experienced Henderson hoping to play for England at World Cup

Henderson started out at Sunderland before joining Liverpool in 2011, overcoming a difficult start to become captain and leading them to success in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

He opted to leave Anfield for the riches of the Saudi Pro League and Al-Ettifaq in 2023 – a move which saw him widely criticised after previously being a vocal advocate of pro-LGBTQ initiatives.

He endured a miserable six-month spell in the Middle East and linked up with Ajax in January 2024. He ought to have won an Eredivisie title in his only full season in Amsterdam but Ajax blew a nine-point lead at the top of the table with six games to go to be pipped by PSV Eindhoven.

Henderson still harbours hopes of playing at next summer’s World Cup and was recalled to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel in March.
