Apple is working on a MagSafe charger with a higher power rating of 45W. That's almost double the maximum. This Qi 2.2-compatible charger may be announced along with the iPhone 17 due out later this year.

Apple iPhones are not very fast to charge. 25W is currently the limit while some other phones are above 100W. Thus, fully charging your iPhone 16 takes an unnecessarily long time. 1 hour and 45 minutes to be exact. Apple may halve that time starting with the iPhone 17.

The above photo appeared at the Taiwanese approval body NCC. We see a new MagSafe charger that you put an iPhone on with an output of 45W (3A x 15V). There will be a version with a 1-meter cable (A3502) and one with a 2-meter cable (A3503). Both are compatible with the new Qi 2.2 standard.

Qi 2.2 compatible

In theory, Qi 2.2 supports powers up to 50W but so Apple seems to have opted for 45W. The charger does not yet come into its full potential with any iPhone; the iPhone 16 supports wireless charging up to 25W. Whether the new MagSafe charger will then work at a lower power level remains to be seen, but it is the obvious choice.

The new charger may be announced at the same time as the iPhone 17 series. Whether the iPhone 17 or just the iPhone 17 Pro can handle the higher speeds is still unclear. Apple has a knack for deliberately providing the entry-level iPhone with lesser specs to drive sales to the more expensive models.
