Forget iOS 19, next version is called iOS 26

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple will not release iOS 19 at the next Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but rather iOS 26. The company plans to align the names of its operating systems with their release years to avoid confusion. This approach does not sound illogical, but what does it all mean?

A question of conscience; what year did iOS 13 come out? And the iPhone 12? Without doing a lot of math backwards, there is no easy answer to that. Apple thinks the iPhone is mature enough that it can focus on peripherals. And so the naming scheme is going to be shaken up. At least that's the expectation from Bloomberg.

iOS 26 is closer than you think

If rumors are true, June 9 will not see iOS 19, but iOS 26. This new naming scheme would also apply to other operating systems Apple is releasing. Those are macOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS26, etc. The naming is not the only thing that is changing; the appearance is also going through a major overhaul.

Samsung did the same thing in 2020

The name change is reminiscent of what Samsung did in 2020. The then-announced Galaxy S20 succeeded the S10 with which the type number matched the year. Whether Apple also intends to use the same naming scheme for its iPhone remains to be seen, but it would sound logical.

However, this creates an additional problem for Apple. Apple typically announces its newest iPhones in September. The iPhone 26 would then be announced in 2025. Samsung does not have this problem by releasing new Galaxy S phones at the beginning of the year.

The answer will follow June 9

We'll hear the answer on June 9 when Apple holds its annual WWDC. That event kicks off with a keynote on Monday, June 9, at 10 AM local time, which is 7 p.m. Central European Time. Apple will then traditionally demonstrate the latest versions of its popular operating systems, including iOS and macOS. New iPhone will be announced later this year along with the new iOS version.
