Sales of Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge seem disappointing; is the battery the problem?

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge has been on sale for almost two weeks, and various signs indicate that sales are disappointing. We have also noticed that sales of the slim device are poor, much lower than those of other S25 models. Has Samsung misjudged the level of interest?
It was supposed to be the new trend of 2025: ultra-thin phones. Phones that defy the laws of nature and empty your wallet. Samsung's answer came in the form of the Galaxy S25 Edge and saw the light of day on January 22, 2025, during Galaxy Unpacked. Thin phone comes with thin battery
We didn't get many details in January, so we had to guess at the specifications. The first specs trickled in a few days later, with the most important being the expected battery capacity. It would be only 3900 mAh. Considering a screen size of 6.7 inches coupled with the energy-hungry Snapdragon 8 Elite, that caused some concern.
Battery life is mediocre at best
Now that we have been able to test the S25 Edge, those concerns appear to be justified. The battery life is, as Sammobile describes it, mediocre. Not great for a phone that costs €1249 and was supposed to be the start of a whole new wave of thin smartphones. 1250 euros for battery life this mediocre is a crime
And that is reflected in the sales figures. Apparently, more people waited for the first reviews before buying one. The number of units sold through our price comparison site can be counted on one hand. Normally, we see dozens of sales in the first few weeks after a new Galaxy S release.
No exact sales figures yet
We also usually see a positive press release from Samsung in the first few weeks after a release, mentioning sales figures. This press release did come out, but it did not contain any figures. And another sign of things to come: Samsung is offering an additional €100 discount during the preorder period on top of existing promotions.
This meant that, for a limited time, you got twice as much storage for the same price. That offer was valid from day 1 of sales, with the extra discount added later. Not something you do when sales are going well.
Consequences for future models
Samsung is said to have plans to introduce future Edge models as replacements for the Plus model. Samsung has the luxury of waiting to see how sales of the Samsung S25 Edge go before removing the S26 Plus from its lineup. With weak sales, it is also questionable whether this plan will go ahead.
In the meantime, Apple will be following the news about the S25 Edge sales with interest. They have yet to unveil their ultra-thin iPhone. Rumor has it that it will also have a small battery, but Apple's close collaboration between hardware and software means it can get by with a much lower battery capacity.
