Spain v Portugal: both teams wear black armbands in tribute to Diogo Jota

The women’s national teams of both Portugal and Spain paid tribute to Diogo Jota by wearing black armbands during their Women’s Euro 2025 game in Bern on Thursday.
Jota, the Liverpool and the Portugal men’s team forward, died tragically in a car accident along with his brother, Andre Silva, in the province of Zamora in north-western Spain.
Among the outpouring of emotional tributes from across the global football community, a minute’s silence was observed before both Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and the same will happen before Friday’s fixtures.

On an emotionally-charged evening, many fans inside the Wankdorf Stadium could be seen displaying images and messages in tribute to the brothers.
Both the Portuguese team and Spanish team wore black armbands during the match after the request was approved by UEFA a few hours before kick-off.
Spain, who lifted the World Cup two years ago in Australia and New Zealand but have never won the Women’s European Championship, are one of the favourites to go all the way this summer.
Portugal, meanwhile, have never progressed beyond the group stage of a major tournament but will be hoping to make history in Switzerland.
Portugal and Spain have been drawn in a group alongside Italy and Belgium.
