Nico Williams keen to ‘make history’ after rejecting Barcelona for new Athletic Club contract

Nico Williams has doubled down on his commitment to Athletic Club, turning down interest from Barcelona to continue his career in Bilbao.
The Spain international, who played a key role in La Roja’s Euro 2024 triumph, attracted strong attention this summer from the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
Barcelona, in particular, were reportedly prepared to trigger his €58million release clause in an attempt to bring the winger to Camp Nou, a year after first registering their interest.
However, Williams recently signed a contract extension with Athletic Club until June 2035, and he’s made it clear that his heart remains in the Basque Country.
“We have a long season ahead of us and some ambitious goals, like playing in the Champions League – something every player dreams of,” Nico said.
“What could be better than doing it with the club of my life? I want to keep making history here at San Mamés, with the fans, with my family, and full of enthusiasm.”

Athletic Club’s director of football, Mikel Gonzalez, hailed the decision as a significant victory for the club.
“He is a unique and exceptional player, and retaining this talent at Athletic is fantastic news,” said Gonzalez.
Williams’ loyalty is especially meaningful given his long-standing connection to the club. He joined Athletic’s youth academy at just 11 years old, and now, at 22, is one of the most exciting young wingers in European football.
Williams will continue to share the pitch with his older brother, Inaki Williams, who has been named first-team captain for the upcoming season.
“We’ve both always dreamed of this moment,” Nico shared.
“My brother is a role model for everyone, especially for me. I think he’s the best person to be captain, and I can’t wait to see him wearing the armband for a long time.”
