Chelsea defeat will help us – PSG captain Marquinhos

Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos is adamant their Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea doesn’t detract from what has been a remarkable season for the Ligue 1 side.

PSG were outplayed by Chelsea in New Jersey with two goals from Cole Palmer paving the way for the Londoners to cruise to a 3-0 win that was as straightforward as it was surprising.

The defeat ended PSG’s hopes of a quintet that included a domestic treble and their first Champions League crown.

Brazil defender Marquinhos said: “I’ve been at PSG for 13 years and I’ve never experienced such an incredible season.

“We are all disappointed to lose this title. But there is an incredible feeling in our heads and we need to keep that in mind. Even if we didn’t win, it doesn’t take anything away from our incredible season.

“We really wanted to bring this title home. Today we didn’t succeed, it’s frustrating, but this defeat will help us and we will learn to do even better next season.”

Ill-disciplined PSG lose their cool

PSG came into the final as favourites but never got going as Chelsea swarmed all over them.

The European champions’ frustration was evident with Joao Neves sent off late on for pulling the hair of Chelsea antagonist-in-chief Marc Cucurella while there were unpleasant scenes at the final whistle with PSG boss Luis Enrique appearing to push Joao Pedro in the face.

Luis Enrique insisted afterwards he was trying to keep the peace.

The Spaniard said: “I think that at the end of the game, there is a situation that can be perfectly avoided by everyone.

“My intention, as always, was to try to separate the players so that it does not degenerate. It’s really avoidable, there’s a lot of pressure. There have been problematic things coming from many people. This is not the best way to attract attention.”

He added: “I have no problem expressing my feelings at the end of the game in a high level of pressure. It’s very stressful for all of us and it’s going to be impossible to avoid that.

“Everybody was involved. It was not what was best and the end result of the pressure of the match.

“I have seen [Chelsea boss Enzo] Maresca. I saw he had pushed others and we had to separate all the players and I do now know where that pressure came from.

“But this situation was to separate the footballers so the situation did not become worse.”

Marquinhos impressed by Chelsea

Marquinhos had no argument with the result with Chelsea’s first-half performance paving the way for an impressive win.

“It’s a team with a philosophy close to ours,” he said. “They had a very nice first period and I think that was the key to the result.

“They were effective. They studied us well and exploited some small weaknesses. We were not at our best in the first period. It’s hard because it was a game that was close to our hearts to end the incredible season we lived. It’s a shame.”
