‘A dream’ – McTominay hailed as Serie A MVP winner after steering Napoli to Scudetto

Scott McTominay has shown that there’s plenty of life after leaving Manchester United by lifting the Serie A trophy with Napoli and earning the league’s MVP award.

McTominay played a starring role in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari on Friday night, scoring the opener that sealed the title by a single point over Inter Milan.

As the final whistle blew, McTominay dropped to the pitch in tears, overwhelmed by the moment.

“The sacrifice of every single player in this group is just incredible. The people deserve it, as they’ve been behind us from day one. For me to come here and experience this, it’s just a dream,” McTominay said after the game.

The 28-year-old’s seamless transition to life in Naples has even earned him a new nickname among fans- “McFratm,” a blend of his name and the Neapolitan word for “my brother.” Though he admits his Italian still needs work, McTominay feels the connection with his new supporters.

“My Italian is OK, I can understand, but speaking it takes more confidence and it’s not easy. It is much easier to do it with people who don’t speak any English. I can feel a lot of love,” he said.

McTominay’s move to Napoli last summer ended his 22-year stint with Manchester United. He joined for £25 million and quickly became a key figure under manager Antonio Conte, finishing the season with 12 league goals – enough to be named Serie A’s Player of the Season.

Conte, reflecting on McTominay’s growth, said earlier this month, “He feels more complete and knowledgeable and he’s reaching a key stage in his career where he needs to decide his direction. He never had a primary role at Man United, while here we gave him one. He’s worked hard and now he’s a complete player.”

The other big signing of Napoli’s summer rebuild, Romelu Lukaku, sealed Friday’s victory with the second goal – his 14th of the season alongside a league-leading 10 assists. Conte, who made signing both Lukaku and McTominay a top priority after taking the reins at Napoli, was recognised as Serie A’s coach of the year.

Elsewhere in Serie A’s end-of-season awards, Roma’s Mile Svilar was named best goalkeeper, Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni best defender, AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders best midfielder, and Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui best striker. Como’s young forward Nico Paz took home the best under-23 player award.
