Tyler Huntley: Cleveland Browns to sign sixth quarterback – report

The Cleveland Browns will deal with their lengthy quarterback injury list by making Tyler Huntley their sixth player in the position, according to a report.

2022 Pro Bowl pick Huntley will provide competition for Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, an AP source said on condition of anonymity.

The Browns are in Charlotte, North Carolina this week to take part in joint work-outs with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and a pre-season game on Friday.

Cleveland Browns injuries

Pickett and Gabriel performed individual drills on Monday as the pair deal with hamstring injuries, while Sanders reported a sore shoulder and Watson is expected to miss the season because of Achilles injuries.

“No, I didn’t,” head coach Kevin Stefanski replied when he was asked whether such a succession of injuries had been “on his bingo card”.

“Every day you learn something new. They’re all working hard but it’s part of it. All these guys, which I’m appreciative of, are pushing to do the best they can.”

Tyler Huntley stats

Huntley went 2-3 for Miami last season, completing 86 of 133 passes (64.7%) for 829 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions (via USA Today).

The 27-year-old had 26 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns and helped his team beat the Browns 20-3 at Huntington Bank Field during Week 17, filling in for Tua Tagovailoa.

Between 2020 and 2023, Huntley was back-up to Lamar Jackson at Baltimore, making the Pro Bowl after going to 2-2 as a starter.

He has 25 career appearances and 14 starts, with a 5-9 record.

Shedeur Sanders: Browns play down injury

Stefanski played down 23-year-old Sanders’s issue as “just soreness”. “We’ll look at his process, making sure his arm’s ready to go,” added Stefanski. “But it’s nothing more than that.

“Injuries are part of this game. They’re frustrating from the standpoint of losing a guy for a good amount of time.

“That’s tough on the players, but dealing with injuries and adjusting because of injuries is part of the game.”

Cleveland Browns NFL schedule

The Browns face the Panthers on Friday (19:00 ET / 16:00 PT) before their pre-season schedule proceeds to an encounter with the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16 (13:00 ET / 10:00 PT).

They then host the Los Angeles Rams in their final warm-up game on August 23 and are at home to the Cincinnati Bengals in their NFL opener (13:00 ET / 10:00 PT).

Flacco is on course to start that game, with Pickett second in the Browns’ depth chart, rookie Gabriel third and Sanders fourth.
