Sverre Nypan: Who is the £12.5m Man City signing making ‘special connection’ with Haaland?

Manchester City have signed Norway under-21 international Sverre Nypan from Norwegian side Rosenborg for £12.5 million on a five-year contract.

Midfielder Nypan reportedly arrived in Manchester on a private plane on Sunday before completing terms to join compatriots Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb at the Etihad Stadium.

The 18-year-old follows Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli as City’s summer transfer window signings.

Who is Nypan, why have City signed him and what did he say about his journey to Manchester? 101GreatGoals.com has the details.

Sverre Nypan transfer: Man City position

“It’s been a really cool day,” Nypan told Adressa after arriving in England. “It’s the first time I’ve been in a private plane… [that] was an experience, too.”

City noted Nypan’s “versatility, talent and technique” and say he can play as an attacking midfielder, winger or forward alongside his ususal central midfield role.

“Nypan is a central or attacking midfielder with an exceptionally high football IQ for his age,” said Bastian Schmitz, of football stats site Transfermarkt.

“He is two-footed, creative and has a good passing game – many of them are smart passes. He handles the ball well and also has a very good work rate.

“This season he has been used as a false nine and as an attacking midfielder, although the deeper position suits him much better.”

Sverre Nypan: Norway ‘connection’

Senior Norway internationals Haaland and Bobb give City a “special connection” with Norway, Nypan said. “I am very proud to have become the latest Norwegian player to have joined the club,” he added.

“I am still very young with a lot to learn, but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola – the best manager in the world – will only help me become a better player.”

Norway have capped Nypan at every age group from Under-15 level, making his Under-21 debut as a 15-year-old.

Arsenal, Aston Villa and Girona were also keen to sign him, The Athletic reported in June. Nypan is being linked with a loan move to the Spanish side – who are part of City Football Group – next season.

Sverre Nypan stats

Rosenborg handed Nypan more than 70 appearances, returning 14 goals and 11 assists for a direct goal involvement every 178 minutes.

“His body appears to be still growing and he had a few growing problems at the start of [last] season, which made it harder for him to get going,” said Schmitz.

Nypan became the youngest player to score a league goal for Rosenborg at the age of 16 years and 145 days in May 2023.

He is the seventh-youngest player to have appeared in the Norwegian league. Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard holds the record from his time at Stromsgodset, debuting at 15 years and 118 days old.

Man City signings

Netherlands midfielder Reijnders joined City for £46m from Milan, as did France’s Cherki from Lyon for an initial fee of more than £30m.

Left-sided wideman Ait-Nouri arrived from Wolves for £31m transfer from Wolves, and goalkeeper Bettinelli signed for a nominal fee from Chelsea until 2026.

Defending their title, City finished third last season for the first time since Guardiola’s maiden campaign in 2016/17, sealing qualification for the Champions League on the final day.
