England 2-1 Italy (AET): Super subs Agyemang and Kelly send Lionesses to another Euro final

England reached the Euro 2025 final in the most dramatic of circumstances as two last-gasp goals from substitutes Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly secured a 2-1 victory over Italy.

The Lionesses reached their third successive tournament final and will defend their European title on Sunday despite looking like they were going home for a long time in Geneva on Tuesday night after Barbara Bonansea’s first-half goal.

But Agyemang slammed home the equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time, before Kelly scored with a minute of extra-time to play after initially seeing her penalty saved.

Sarina Wiegman’s side will now face either Spain or Germany in Sunday’s final in Basel.

Italy frustrate Lionesses

The first chance for the Lionesses fell to striker Alessia Russo. Still without a goal at the tournament, the Arsenal striker did well to find some space in the box but her strike whistled the wrong side of the right-hand post.

But Italy landed the first blow after slowly growing into the game, with England failing to clear before Bonansea took a touch and volleyed in to put the underdogs in front.

The Lionesses responded well and could well have equalised quickly but goalkeeper Laura Giuliani read the forward’s side-footed shot well to parry it away.

Wiegman’s side began the second half showing more intent and improvements but once again, were lacking the quality in the final third, with Lauren Hemp and Ella Toone both finishing disappointingly after finding themselves in good positions.

Still, Italy’s threat remained with Hannah Hampton busy to block a number of shots away.

Georgia Stanway and Hemp forced more stops out of Guiliani but the Azzurre stopper seemed desperate not to be beaten as time began to run out for the defending European champions.

Super subs strike again

Not for the first time this tournament, Wiegman turned to the bench for some inspiration and that player was, once again, Chloe Kelly.

After avoiding conceding another goal on the break, Kelly’s first action was to cut inside and win a corner, with Lucy Bronze’s resulting header blocked away, before the same player went much closer with another which looped across goal – but Italy managed to clear.

Aggie Beever-Jones and Michelle Agyemang were the next to be introduced as Wiegman opted to take Alessia Russo and captain Leah Williamson off for what felt like the final roll of the dice at the tournament.

But just when it looked like the super subs were running out of magic, Agyemang stepped up once again in the sixth minute of stoppage time, slamming home after Hemp’s cross wasn’t gathered to finally break Italy’s resistance.

Kelly wins it, again

There was very little to report in extra-time, that was until the final three minutes when once again England’s super subs came up trumps once again.

Agyemang, full of confidence after her stunning moment, nearly scored one of the goals of the tournament with a looping effort which hit the crossbar.

Moments later and with about a minute to play, England were given a penalty for a foul by Emma Severini on Beth Mead, and up stepped another sub once again.

Kelly, the scorer of the goal which won England the Euros in 2022, saw her spot-kick intially saved before tapping home the rebound to another sensational victory as her side reached their third successive tournament final.
