Arsenal reach agreement to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP

Arsenal are on the brink of finalising a major summer signing, with an agreement for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres now nearly complete.

The two clubs had previously reached a deal in principle worth €63.5 million (£54.8m), with an additional €10 million (£8.6m) in potential bonuses.

However, the finalisation of the transfer was held up due to negotiations over the structure and attainability of those add-ons.

Those outstanding issues are now almost entirely resolved, with only minor adjustments and final formalities left before the move can be made official. Gyokeres has been fully committed to joining Arsenal throughout the process and didn’t entertain interest from any other clubs.

In a notable gesture, the Swedish striker’s agent agreed to waive his commission to help facilitate the transfer. The 27-year-old is set to sign a contract running until June 2030.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas recently revealed that Gyokeres would face a “heavy fine” and be required to apologise to his team-mates after failing to report for pre-season training – a decision reportedly linked to his desire to secure the move to North London.

Gyokeres was one of Europe’s most prolific forwards last season, netting an astonishing 54 goals in 52 games as he led Sporting to a domestic double, winning both the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal.

Arsenal, who struggled without a natural No.9 during much of the 2024-25 campaign due to injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, identified the Swede as their top target.

Despite finishing second in the Premier League once again, Mikel Arteta’s side scored 17 fewer goals than champions Liverpool, highlighting the need for a clinical striker.

Gyokeres’ rise has been remarkable. After leaving Brighton for just £1 million to join Coventry City in 2021, he became a standout performer in the Championship, eventually earning a €20 million move to Sporting in 2023.

In Portugal, he amassed 97 goals and 28 assists across all competitions, helping the club to back-to-back league titles and a domestic cup triumph.

Arsenal’s summer recruitment drive has been aggressive under new sporting director Andrea Berta. Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard have bolstered the midfield from Real Sociedad and Brentford respectively, while Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke arrived from Chelsea.

Defender Cristhian Mosquera has also agreed a move from Valencia and is expected to join the squad in Singapore shortly.
