Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta impressed by Viktor Gyokeres’ conviction in taking Thierry Henry’s No.14 shirt

Mikel Arteta has been impressed with the “conviction” shown by new signing Viktor Gyokeres, particularly his decision to claim the number 14 shirt worn by Thierry Henry.
Henry scored a record 228 goals for the Gunners across two memorable spells but that has not deterred Gyokeres despite the added pressure that may come as a result.
The Sweden international joined Arsenal from Sporting CP for an initial £55million over the weekend following protracted negotiations and could make his debut in tomorrow’s pre-season friendly with North London rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong.

Arsenal fans snap up Gyokeres shirts
Gyokeres’ decision to wear number 14 has prompted record shirt sales for Arsenal and Arteta has been encouraged by the striker’s self-confidence.
He said: “I use the word conviction and that’s the first thing that I noticed when I spoke to him. Someone very determined, someone that was already really attached to the club by the way he was talking about the club, the history and in this case Thierry [Henry] and what the shirt represented. He straight away felt it, and when you feel it – go for it.”
Arteta is hoping the former Coventry man can play against Spurs but said his availability would be discussed prior to kick off.
“He’s only done today’s session and yesterday very little,” he added. “We’re going to assess tonight how he is and if the medical staff are happy as well with his condition to participate in tomorrow’s match then it’s a possibility. We’re going to discuss that tonight.”
Arteta delighted by Arsenal’s transfer dealings
Arsenal have been proactive in the transfer market this summer as they look to go one better than three successive runners-up finishes in the Premier League.
In addition to Gyokeres, they have also signed Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera.
“I am extremely happy with the way that we have approached the window and how aggressive we have been,” said Arteta.
“There’s still a long period still with the window open. So far we are very happy with what we’ve achieved and [we need to] make sure at the end of the window we continue to be super happy.”
