Luke Shaw says Manchester United’s aim this season is to win the Premier League

Luke Shaw says Manchester United’s aim this season should be to win the Premier League now they have shed the “stragglers” from the squad.

United limped to a 15th-placed finish last season after accumulating their lowest points total in 50 years. It was a tough introduction to life at Old Trafford for boss Ruben Amorim, who moved to the Premier League from Sporting CP in November and struggled to implement a fluid style of play in his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Having made just two major signings this summer – Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha – it seems inconceivable that United will suddenly become title challengers but that is the target, according to left-back Shaw.

Shaw has lofty ambitions for Manchester United

The England international told Sky Sports: “Aims wise, I think the aim has to be winning the Premier League.

“I know people will be questioning me for saying that after last season, but it has to be that. It’s not just me who thinks that. I’m sure the whole team, if you ask them, they all have the same aims.

“Even the manager, I’m sure he probably wouldn’t say it in the press, but we all have to have the same beliefs and ambitions. We all strive for the same thing.”

Shaw has full belief that Amorim will inspire a turnaround in fortunes, adding: “I think his mentality, his demands [show he’s the right man].

“He’s extremely tough on the group. He leaves no stone unturned and I think there are no stragglers in this group anymore. I think everyone has to put the team first. He’s made that very clear.

“I think he’s picking players on how he feels will be best for the team and that’s his choice. As players, we’re fully behind him and fully behind his ideas and what he wants to implement in this team. We feel like a real team, especially this pre-season.

“Since I’ve been back, the group is so together and I think that’s something that we need to keep to make us more of a family, everyone all together and we’re all driving in the same direction.”

Manchester United hoping to offload remaining members of the ‘Bomb Squad’

United will hope to be active in the remaining four weeks of the transfer window but may have to sell before they can buy.

They have sent Marcus Rashford on loan to Barcelona for the season but are still trying to offload the remaining four members of the ‘Bomb Squad’ – Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho – who were not included on the pre-season tour of the United States.

Shaw himself has a lot to prove after another injury-riddled season.

“It can’t be any worse than it was last season,” said the former Southampton defender.

“I was so low last season, so I think anything but that. I feel good and I think especially this pre-season.

“Obviously, I didn’t have a pre-season last season either, so I think it’s really benefiting me to be able to just be fit and train with the team and get minutes.

“I’m enjoying that.”
