New York City Gunman Who Killed Four Was Targeting NFL Headquarters

A gunman who killed four people in New York City wrote a note before killing himself that claimed he was suffering from a brain disease linked to contact sports, and he was trying to target the National Football League offices in Manhattan, officials said earlier today.

New York City mayor Eric Adams told reporters that investigators believe Las Vegas casino worker Shane Tamura was trying to get into the NFL’s Manhattan offices after shooting several people in the building’s lobby on Monday, but he took the wrong elevator bank.

In a three-page handwritten note found in the shooter’s wallet, Tamura – who played high school football in California – claimed to be suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He also wrote that the National Football League covered up the dangers of the sport to players’ brains for profit.

According to the New York City Police Department, Tamura wrote several times in the note that he was sorry. He also requested that his brain be studied after his death for signs of CTE while referencing former NFL offensive lineman Terry Long, who was diagnosed with CTE before committing suicide in 2005.

New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch said that Tamura drove across the country and into New York City just before the shooting. Surveillance videos showed Tamura getting out of a BMW early Monday evening and walking across the plaza of 345 Park Avenue while holding a rifle before entering the building.

Once inside, Tamura opened fire on the lobby, killing off-duty police officer Didarul Islam and hitting another woman who attempted to take cover. He then made his way over to the elevator bank, shooting a guard and another man along the way.

“He appeared to have first walked past the officer, and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds,” Eric Adams said in an interview.

Tamura took the elevator to the 33rd-floor offices of Rudin Management, the company that owns the building, where he shot and killed one person before taking his own life.

In a statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell called the shooting “an unspeakable act of violence.” He also expressed gratitude for law enforcement officers who responded to the shooting. Goodell added that the league will increase security in and around the office building.

“Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family,” Goodell wrote. “We will get through this together.”
