Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is the best goalkeeper in the world – Ivan Rakitic backs German to be Barcelona’s number one

Ivan Rakitic has waded into the row over who should be Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper by publicly backing former team-mate Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
Ter Stegen is reported to have slipped down the pecking order at Barca following the signing of Joan García from crosstown rivals Espanyol and experienced Pole Wojciech Szczesny renewing his contract.
The issue is complicated by the fact Ter Stegen may require back surgery that would keep him out for up to four months.
Ter Stegen had major surgeries in 2021, 2023, 2024, and now 2025. The club is 100% justified in looking for a permanent replacement. pic.twitter.com/bGe3Lr7ZSE

Garcia has to earn it – Rakitic
But, if he can prove his fitness, Rakitic believes the German is still Barca’s best goalkeeper.
He told Cope: “I talked to him and I saw him very excited and happy. I hope his injury is nothing serious and he can return soon.
“Between Joan García and Ter Stegen it’s very easy, Ter Stegen plays. He is the captain and a very respected player at Barça.”
He added: “If Marc is healthy, there is no doubt. I wish all of Barca’s problems were to choose between three great footballers.
“Joan is very talented but he will have to earn it [the number one position]. It’s one thing to play in a La Liga team and another to be Barcelona’s number one. I don’t see a better goalkeeper in Europe or in the world.”
Rakitic backs Yamal to win over critics, with Flick’s support
Rakitic, who retired recently to become the sporting director at Hajduk Split, enjoyed a stellar career in Catalonia, winning La Liga four times and the Champions League in 2015.
And the former Croatia midfielder believes this week’s controversy surrounding Lamine Yamal will also die down.
Spain winger Yamal hit the headlines after celebrating his 18th birthday on Saturday with the use of hired dwarves as entertainment. It is also rumoured he spent part of his offseason on holiday with an OnlyFans star 12 years his senior.
Rakitic added: “He is a boy who deserves to be happy. He’s a spectacular boy, I only hear good things about him. Let’s enjoy him and make him happy, it’s the most important thing.
“In [Barca boss Hansi] Flick, he has the perfect person and when he has to call him into his office, he will.”
