England in crisis: Millie Bright withdraws from Euro 2025 contention as problems pile up for Lionesses

Chelsea captain Millie Bright has made herself unavailable for selection for England’s European Championship campaign this summer.

The 31-year-old endured a long season with the Blues, helping them to a domestic treble, which resulted in her pulling out of the squad for this month’s games in the Nations League.

And she announced this morning she needed more time to recuperate, saying she was not able to “give 100 per cent mentally or physically” for the Three Lions as they attempt to defend the title they won on home soil in 2022.

Bright wrote on Instagram: “This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.

“Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I’m not able to give 100 per cent mentally or physically.

“As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my team mates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future in the game and most importantly the team.”

Bright thanks fans for support

Bright, who captained England in the 2023 World Cup final and has 88 caps, added: “It wouldn’t be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready and able to give everything for the badge and country.

“I’ll be supporting the team with everything I’ve got, and hoping this incredible group of players will do the nation proud. Thank you to my team-mates, coaches, and, most importantly, the fans for your unwavering support.

“It means the world to me.”

Problems mount for Wiegman

Bright would have been a shoo-in for the 23-player squad for the Euros due to be announced by coach Sarina Wiegman tomorrow.

Her withdrawal is another headache for Wiegman who has seen experienced goalkeeper Mary Earps and playmaker Fran Kirby announce their international retirements over the past week.
