Could Manchester United beat Arsenal to Viktor Gyokores? Swede reveals admiration for Ruben Amorim as Gunners deal reportedly stalls

Viktor Gyokores has reignited speculation linking him with Manchester United by praising Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim, and hailing the impact he has had on his career.
Sporting CP striker Gyokores was linked with United and Arsenal earlier in the summer but talk of him joining Amorim in Manchester has dissipated with the Gunners seemingly moving into pole position.
But reports in Portugal suggest a sticking point over the breakdown of the fee is threatening to jeopardise a switch to Mikel Arteta’s men.
Arsenal have offered €65m, plus another €15m in incentives, but Sporting are holding out for €70m, plus €10m.
Just a reminder that Gyokores scored 54 goals across all comps last season…

Lisbon meeting over Gyokores cancelled
A scheduled meeting to discuss the deal was cancelled on Sunday with Arsenal representatives, including sporting director Andrea Berta, reportedly flying home without even getting round the table.
Although a deal is still likely to be struck – Gyokores is due back in training on Friday although it remains to be seen if he turns up – leaving the door ajar for other suitors.
And with United having failed to bolster their forward line this summer – Matheus Cunha plays in a more withdrawn role behind a striker – it could be they go back in for the Swedish international.
Gyokores is certainly giving them encouragement by admitting his admiration for Amorim in an interview with France Football.
“The style of play we had under him suited me perfectly,” said the 27-year-old former Coventry man, who scored 29 goals in the 2023-24 season as Sporting claimed their first Primeira Liga crown in 19 years.
Gyokores stunned by Amorim departure
He added another 39 as Sporting defended their crown last season despite the departure of Amorim to United last November.
“It was a shock, I’d never seen a coach leave in the middle of the season when everything was going so well. No hard feelings,” he added.
“Yes, it was surprising, but I totally understand his decision.”
Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and holding midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer but the striker they badly need remains elusive.
Arteta is also believed to be in the market for an attacking midfielder with Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Rodrygo on the shortlist.
