Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich: Report, result, goals as Roten finish second in 2025 Club World Cup group
Benfica held off a torrent of second-half pressure to beat Bayern Munich to top spot in Group C at the Club World Cup through Andreas Schjelderup’s early strike in Charlotte.
Left-winger Schjelderup, 21, produced a cool finish for the winner inthe 13th minute at the Bank of America Stadium, where the Portuguese side looked comfortable before Bayern brought on Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich at half-time.
Midfielder Kimmich was denied a long-range equaliser because Kane was well offside and Konrad Laimer struck the far post after collecting Thomas Muller’s pass inside the box on the right.
Eagles goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was in inspired form, including a close-range save from Aleksandar Pavlovic and a late stop to thwart Leroy Sane in a one-on-one after Kane played a defence-splitting pass.
Benfica finished a point above Bayern and will face the runners-up from Group D – Chelsea or Esperance – in the last 16, with Die Roten meeting Brazilian leaders Flamengo, who won the section.

Benfica vs Bayern
Kane was left with his head in his hands during added time, having failed to make clean contact with a corner and sent the chance wide among a succession of Bayern opportunities.
The reigning German champions had won eight and drawn three of their previous 11 meetings with Benfica, and manager Vincent Kompany said afterwards that the wilting heat had played a part in his side’s defeat.
Die Roten may face kinder conditions when they meet Brazilian leaders Flamengo in Miami in the knockout stage on Sunday (21:00 BST).
The result also means they have an extra day’s rest, which could be invaluable after a gruelling encounter in which Kane was seen reaching for an ice bucket.
Benfica: Club World Cup win vs Bayern ‘special’
“Above all, we were warriors out there,” said Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva. “We fought to the death for the result.
“Everyone knows our quality – it doesn’t matter if we started with a draw against Boca and ended with a win against Bayern.
“During the season we showed that in difficult moments we were able to recover. This is a very special victory because it is the first against Bayern.”
