Manchester United v Everton: Line-ups, stats and preview

Manchester United will be hoping to continue their promising pre-season when they take on Everton in Atlanta on Sunday as they round off the Premier League Summer Series.

United followed up victory over West Ham with a 4-1 thrashing of Bournemouth in Chicago on Thursday, with goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and Ethan Williams coming before a consolation Matthijs de Ligt own goal late on.

Ruben Amorim’s side produced a dominant display as they breezed past the Cherries in the Windy City, prompting the Portuguese head coach to admit his side looked like a “different team” from the one that registered the club’s lowest points total in 50 years last season.

“It was a good game. We played with intensity. We were aggressive and that is something that we need to improve from last season,” Amorim said after the game.

“It was just a pre-season game but the feeling with the same players, even being a pre-season game, if you look at the same players now playing, it looks like a different team and that is a good sign.”

Amorim also appeared pleased with the cohesion in the squad after a summer of change at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have both arrived while the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony look set to be offloaded before the end of the transfer window.

Marcus Rashford has secured a loan move to Barcelona while speculation has been growing in recent days that United are in talks with RB Leipzig for striker Benjamin Sesko. It has also been reported that Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins is a potential target.

Amorim said: “More than the results is the way they [the team] are playing. They are playing better also because they are connecting better with each other, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch.

“They are stronger. They are faster in this moment. Of course, it’s pre-season, but you can see the intensity is completely different. I can see that the data from the minutes are completely different.

“We are improving, but again, it’s a pre-season game. The pressure is going to be so much different during the season, but it’s important for them to understand that the same players can play a different game.”

Everton, meanwhile, will be aiming to pick up their first win of pre-season following recent defeats to Bournemouth and manager David Moyes’ former club, West Ham.

The contrast in results between the Toffees and Red Devils on the pitch also appears to be reflected in their respective activity off it.

While United have flashed the cash, Moyes, who lasted just 12 months as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford in 2013, admitted this week that Everton are “running out” of time to make the impact they were hoping for in the transfer market.

Despite ambitious new owners and a move to a new stadium, there has been comparatively few squad additions so far this summer. The club have made Carlos Alcaraz’s loan move permanent, as well as bringing in young left-back Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich and striker Thierno Barry from Villarreal as a possible replacement for the released Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

However, the club’s reportedly rejected £27m bid for Southampton midfielder Tyler Dibling is the latest in a number of set-backs for Moyes’ planned rebuild.

“The one thing I’ll do is I’ll tell the fans straight, and I’m telling it straight at the moment, we’re having a bit of a struggle getting ones in quickly,” the Toffees boss added.

Man Utd v Everton team news

Sunday’s fixture could see Amorim hand a much-anticipated United debut to Mbeumo.

The £71m arrival from Brentford did not feature against either West Ham United and Bournemouth, but could be set for his Red Devil bow against Everton.

Cunha, United’s other marquee signing so far this summer, could also return after being rested against Andoni Iraola’s team.

Hojlund, who insisted he is “more than ready” to fight for his place after an underwhelming return last season, could again lead the line after a strong performance last time out.

Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez remain sidelined with injury.

For Everton, Jarrad Branthwaite continues to be the major absentee, with the centre-back missing the tour through injury.

Moyes will likely make changes to the side that started the clash with West Ham, with Barry a possible option up top, having been used off the bench against the Hammers.

  • In the two Premier League meetings last season, United thrashed Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford before playing out a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at Goodison Park.
  • Moyes has faced United 40 times over the course of his managerial career, winning just seven of those games.

Prediction for Man Utd v Everton

Given the contrasting form of the two teams, United will go into the game as heavy favourites.

Everton, however, will want to end the Series on a positive note and, after shipping five goals in two games, Moyes will be hoping to reinstate the strong defensive foundation that brought his side success last term.
