Manchester United announce Cunha deal on first day of 2025 summer transfer window

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves after activating the Brazil forward’s £62.5m release clause.
United confirmed the deal for the 26-year-old on the opening day of this year’s summer transfer window, which has been adjusted to enable clubs to register players ahead of the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on 15 June (UK time) in the United States.
Cunha has agreed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year at Old Trafford and will now join up with the Brazil national side for Carlo Ancelotti’s first game in charge after completing his medical with United this weekend.

“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” a club statement read.
“The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration.
“Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Cunha had been a key target for United as their head coach, Ruben Amorim, looks to reshape the team following the club’s worst ever Premier League season, where they finished in 16th spot.
The Brazilian, who scored 33 goals in 92 appearances across two-and-a-half seasons at Molineux, looks set to become United’s first signing of this year’s two-part transfer window, which initially runs from 1 June to 10 June, before reopening on 16 June until 1 September.
Although United are not participating in this summer’s Club World Cup, the newly-adjusted window applies to each of the 20 national associations with clubs competing, of which England, with Manchester City and Chelsea involved, is one.
The early opening has allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid after the Premier League champions reportedly accepted a fee of €10m (£8.4m) from the Spanish club to release the defender from his contract prematurely.
