Beckham criticises Manchester United players for not upholding club standards

David Beckham slammed the conduct of “one or two” Manchester United players following the club’s post-season tour of Asia, insisting they were “not acting in the right manner”.

The former United midfielder and ex-England captain did not refer to anyone by name, but admitted the behaviour of certain players was “not okay in my eyes”.

The Red Devils travelled to Malaysia and Hong Kong for two exhibition matches after concluding their worst-ever Premier League season, where they finished in 16th place.

Defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in Bilbao compounded a miserable campaign for Ruben Amorim’s side, who fell to a shock 1-0 loss to the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur before beating Hong Kong’s national team 3-1 on Friday.

Amad Diallo was seen putting his middle finger up to a supporter during the ASEAN All-Stars game, reacting to what the club claimed was “serious personal abuse” directed at the player about his mother.

It marked another dour chapter in United’s dismal season, after it was reported that Amorim told Alejandro Garnacho to find a new club after the Argentine’s post-match comments in Bilbao suggested his future at Old Trafford was uncertain.

The whole saga appears to have far from impressed Beckham, a self-proclaimed United supporter who made close t0 400 appearances for the club between 1992 and 2003.

“It’s tough times but I don’t like seeing some of the things that are going on at the club,” Beckham told CBS Sports.

“On the pitch is what counts but in all honesty, I’m seeing a lot of things that are not on the pitch that are not okay in my eyes, as a fan and as a lover of Manchester United.

“I’m talking about sometimes the way players are acting. You have to represent the badge and that’s what it’s about and I’ve seen a lot of things where players are not acting in the right manner.

“We were a part of a team that was so well-mannered. We understood what it meant to play for Manchester United. We understood what the badge meant. Wherever we travelled, whether it was in Europe, whether it was in Asia, you respected the fans.

“You respect the fans, you respect the fact that they’re turning up, paying money and wanting you to sign and take pictures. You respect that. I don’t see that. I’m not saying it’s all of the players. I’m saying it’s one or two that are disrespecting that and I don’t like that.”

Beckham also compared the current United team with that of another of his former clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, after the Ligue 1 champions lifted their first-ever Champions League title with a record-breaking 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in Munich.

“Their [PSG’s] philosophy has changed and they all stuck with it and I think that they’ve created a team that are together,” the Inter Miami president added.

“They are together as a team, every individual, every player is running for every [player] and that’s what you want. When you’re a fan of a club, that’s what you want to see and that’s not what we see at Manchester United. You’re not seeing that.”
